Individual Learning Accounts (ILA)
(Print Flyer in PDF format)  What is PDF?

ILA stands for 'Individual Learning Account' and is a UK government funded initiative. The accounts can be used by:

  • Individuals - to subsidise courses they wish to do.

  • Businesses - to subsidise employee's training.

F1 is now an approved Individual Learning Account supplier and all F1 courses are eligible for the subsidy.

Businesses will receive a tax rebate on any money credited to an employee's ILA.

“Individual Learning Accounts
make it easier to pay for your
own learning and training, putting
you in control of realising your potential.”

What are Individual Learning Accounts?

Individual Learning Accounts are a government sponsored scheme to help individuals learn the skills they think they will need in the future. Currently it is worth £150 for the first year and £100 for subsequent years.

A Brief Guide to Individual Learning Accounts

Q1 - What are Individual Learning Accounts?

Individual Learning Accounts are a new way to help you pay for your learning. Backed by the Government and supported by colleges and other learning providers such as blueU, Individual Learning Accounts offer a package of discounts which makes it easier for you to get into learning.

Q2 - Who can open an Individual Learning Account?

If you are aged 19 or over, you can open an Individual Learning account. They are available to anyone not already receiving Government funding and they are especially useful if you have not done a lot of learning before.

Q3 - What do I get from an Individual Learning account?

Once your account has been opened and you have your Account Card, you'll be able to claim from amongst the following discounts:

  • 80% off the cost of some kinds of learning (mainly relating to short courses from public colleges and not those from F1)
  • 20% off the cost of a wide range of learning, up to a maximum of £100 in any one year
  • If you're one of the first million Account Holders to sign up for eligible learning, you'll get a contribution of up to £150 discount off the cost of your learning, provided you put in £25 of your own money.

Q4 - What learning will be eligible for discounts?

You can claim either the £150 contribution or the 20% discount towards a very wide range of work-related learning.

Q5 - What learning won't be eligible for discounts?

You will not be able to claim discounts on F1 courses you have already started learning, for which you already receive other government help.

Q6 - How long does it take to set up my ILA?

Currently, after completing the initial form it takes about 2 weeks to get your account set up.

Learning Account Centres

As well as paying the discount to the college or learning provider, the Individual Learning Account centre will keep details of your account - how much you have claimed, what learning you have bought with your discounts, and other details. You can check with the Centre at any time how much of your entitlement to discount remains unused, although the Centre will send you a statement of this once a year anyway. The Centre can also deal with your general enquiries about Individual Learning Accounts and the benefit that Account Holders can expect. Call them on 0800 072 5678.

You can also check your account details by logging to your account at the my-ILA web site, www.my-ila.com (subject to it not being down!)
