Overview

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer recently declared that Microsoft now sees itself as a "devices and services company", rather than its traditional role as a software company.

Embodying this change, in October 2012 Microsoft has launched their own high specification NVIDIA T30 based tablet, Microsoft Surface with Windows RT and in January 2013 Microsoft are releasing the even higher specification Intel Ivy Bridge Core i5 processor based tablet Microsoft Surface Pro. The Surface RT tablet also includes a copy of Microsoft Office 2013 and the Surface Pro runs both Store Apps and all existing Windows Programs.

Simultaneously Microsoft have launched their own skillpipe Digital Textbook Reader for Windows 7 & 8, a revolutionary new reader which enables students to read, annotate and share notes in their automatically updated Microsoft Official Curriculum course manuals.

Note that the offline Windows Store App ‘Microsoft skillpipe Digital Textbook Reader’ is now scheduled for release in spring 2013. Until then Microsoft Surface RT users can access their courseware online via Internet Explorer. Microsoft Surface Pro users can download and use the Digital Textbook Reader immediately.

  1. Q - What if my Microsoft Surface tablet does not arrive before the start of my course?
    A - You have two options. If you have your own laptop, you can download your digital courseware and bring it along to use on the course. Alternatively, you can email us in advance of the course and we will provide, free of charge, a loan Windows RT tablet for use on your course. Note, these loan tablets are not to be removed from the classroom.
     
  2. Q - When will I receive my Microsoft Surface RT/Pro/iPad tablet?
    A - We order either your Microsoft Surface RT/Pro tablet from Microsoft UK Store site or your iPad from Apple Store as soon as we receive payment from you. Delivery is Direct from the relevant supplier.

  3. Q - Who is responsible for the guarantee that comes with the Microsoft Surface or iPad Tablet?
    A - F1 purchased the tablet on your behalf and ships it direct to your own address. Please contact either Microsoft direct as detailed here or Apple direct here.

  4. Q - When will I receive my Digital courseware?
    A - We order your Digital Courseware from Microsoft's publishing partner Avarto services as soon as we receive payment from you. Delivery is a direct download link sent to you via an email from Avarto. Please ensure emails from Avarto.com are included on your email white list.

  5. Q - What is different from ordering a course or certification with digital courseware and the normal printed courseware?
    A - When you choose F1’s digital courseware course option, instead of receiving a printed Microsoft Official Curriculum manual on the first day of your course, you will receive, in advance of the course, an access code for you to view and annotate your own skillpipe Digital Textbook manual which can be accessed from up to three Windows PC's or tablets.

  6. Q - What do I need to receive and use Microsoft digital courseware?
    A - You need to register a Windows Live ID. If you already have a Hotmail address you can use it. However, there are advantages if you use your normal company email address as a Windows Live ID instead. For more information please see here.

  7. Q - Can I request a printed manual instead of Digital courseware?
    A - Yes, just request "Printed not Digital courseware" when booking you course or certification and a charge of £15 per course will be added to your booking.

  8. Q - Can I have both Digital courseware and a printed manual?
    A - Yes if you have purchased Digital courseware you are welcome to print off your own manual and bring it to your course.
  9. Q - Can I choose a different tablet from the Surface?
    A - We understand that some companies do not have a policy to support Microsoft Surfaces, in which case we are happy to supply you with a tablet of equal value from another supplier.
