section. If you install the software from a network share, or Internet location, some of
the instructions may differ, particularly the setup locations.
Student Computer Setup
- Set up the hardware according to the manufacturers instructions.
- Install Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0.
- Insert the CD-ROM containing Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 into the drive.
On a clean machine, autorun will initiate installation.
On a formatted machine, follow these steps:
- Open an MS-DOS Command Prompt window.
- Change to the \i386 folder on the CD-ROM, type winnt /b and then press ENTER.
- Follow the prompts to install Windows NT Server, by using the parameters provided in the
following table. Respond to all other installation prompts with information appropriate
for the computer or location.

You will be asked if you are using a DHCP server. If
you decide to create a DHCP server for the classroom, you could set up one computer as the
DHCP server and primary domain controller for the classroom and enter the following IP
addresses into that computer. All other computers would use the DHCP server to obtain
their IP addresses:
- DHCP Server Address: 131.107.2.200
- Address range to use for computers: 131.107.2.1 - 131.107.2.199
- Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
If you choose not to have a DHCP server or primary domain controller, configure each
computer to use a specific IP address as it is set up. You could use the same address
range above to accomplish this.

student's computer rather than using the MSDN Visual Studio Help CD. This eliminates the
need for students to frequently switch between the MSDN Visual Studio Help CD and the Mastering
Distributed Application Design and Development CD during class.
- Do not install InstallShield when prompted.
- Install BackOffice.
- From the Server Setups screen, select Launch BackOffice Installation Wizard and
click Install.
