SQL 7.0 Overview (1140)
Set-up guideRequirements
This course requires a classroom with a minimum of one computer for the instructor and
one for each student. Before class begins, install and configure all computers using the
information and instructions that follow.
Instructor Computer
The instructor computer requires the following hardware and software configuration.
Hardware
The following hardware is required for the instructor computer:
- Pentium 133
- 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM
- 2-gigabyte (GB) hard disk
- CD-ROM drive
- Network adapter
- Super VGA (SVGA) monitor
- Internet access
- Sound card with amplified speakers
- Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
Software
The following software is required for the instructor computer:
- Microsoft® Windows NT® Server version 4.0 and Service Pack 3
- Microsoft SQL Server interim build
- Microsoft® PowerPoint® Viewer
- Microsoft® Word Viewer
- Microsoft® Internet Explorer 4.0
Student Computer
Each student computer requires the following hardware and software configuration.
Hardware
The following hardware is required for each student computer:
- Pentium 133
- 64 MB of RAM
- 2- GB hard disk
- CD-ROM drive
- Network adapter
- SVGA monitor
- Internet access
- Sound card with amplified speakers
- Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
Software
The following software is required for each student computer:
- Microsoft® Windows NT Server version
4.0 and Service Pack 3
- Microsoft® Internet Explorer 4.0
Classroom Configuration
The following configuration and naming conventions are used throughout this course and
are required for the hands-on labs:
- The instructor computer is named Instructorx (where x is a number that is
unique to the intranet).
- Each student computer is named in the following way:
- All computers that are configured as servers are named Serverx (where x is
a unique number for each server on the intranet).
- Each domain is named Domainx (where x is a number that is unique to the
intranet).
If your classroom is on an intranet, make sure that the
numbers that you assign to each student computer, instructor computer, domain, and so on
are unique. By providing unique numbers for these, you will avoid inadvertently causing
naming conflicts.
Setup Instructions
Use the following procedures to prepare each computer for class.
Before You Begin
You will need to do the following:
- Read through all setup procedures.
- Make sure that you have the Trainer Materials compact disc provided with the course
materials.
Estimated time to set up the classroom: 3 hours
Instructor Computer Setup
Use the following instructions to set up the instructor computer:
- Set up the hardware according to the manufacturers instructions. (Refer to the
hardware requirements.)
- Configure the hard disk as follows:
- Drive C: 1.2 GB formatted as FAT (this provides space for multiple configurations
if needed)
- Drive D: 750 MB formatted as Windows NT File System (NTFS)
- 50 MB unformatted space

- To install and configure Windows NT Server 4.0
- Start the computer with the Windows NT Server Setup boot disk.
- When prompted, supply the following configuration information.

- To configure the DHCP Server
- Log on as Administrator.
- Click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Administrative
Tools (Common), and then click DHCP Manager.
DHCP Manager appears.
- In the DHCP Servers list, double-click Local Machine.
- On the Scope menu, click Create.
- Configure the DHCP server scope using the following information.

- In the Lease Duration dialog box, click Unlimited.
- Click OK, and when prompted to activate the scope now, click Yes.
A DHCP Manager message box appears, stating that no more data
is available.
- Click OK to close the DHCP Manager message box.
- On the DHCP Options menu, click Scope.
- In the Unused Options list, click 046 WINS/NBT Node Type, and then click Add.
- Click Value, and then in the Byte box, type 0x8
- In the Unused Options list, click 044 WINS/NBNS Servers, and then
click Add.
- Click Edit Array.
- In the New IP Address box, type 131.107.2.200 (suggested IP address), and
then click Add.
- Click OK to return to the DHCP Options: Scope dialog box.
- Click OK to return to the DHCP Manager dialog box.
- Click OK to close the DHCP Manager message box.
- Exit DHCP Manager.

- To install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3
- Insert the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 compact disc into the CD-ROM
drive.
- When the NTSP3.htm Web page appears, scroll down, and then click Install Service Pack.
The Confirm File Open dialog box appears.
- Click Open.
The Welcome dialog box appears.
- Click Next.
The Service Pack Setup dialog box appears.
- Click Next.
The Service Pack Setup dialog box appears, asking if you want to create an
Uninstall directory.
- Verify that Yes, I want to create an Uninstall directory is selected, and
then click Next.
- Click Finish.
Files are copied.
The Windows NT Service Pack Setup dialog box appears, stating that
Windows NT 4.0 has been updated.
- Click OK.
Windows NT Server will shut down and then restart.

- To install and configure SQL Sever interim build
- Locate the Setup program using Microsoft®
Windows NT Explorer. This can be found in the \Sphinx_442.03\i386 directory.
- Start the Setup program and use the information in the following table to complete the
installation.

- To install and configure Microsoft

Internet Explorer 4.0
- Run the ie4setup.exe Setup application located in \Sphinx_442.03\Ie4 on the
compact disc. Use the information in the following table to complete the installation.

- After Internet Explorer 4.0 is installed, start Internet Explorer 4.0.
- The Internet Connection Wizard is automatically displayed. For the convenience of the
students, you will step through the Internet Connection Wizard so students do not have to
configure Internet Explorer 4.0. They will open local Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)
pages.
- In the Internet Connection Wizard, select the "I already have an internet
connection set up for this computer and I do not want to change it." option.
- Click Finish.
The "A connection with the server could not be established." error
message appears.
- Click OK.

- To install fonts for the PowerPoint presentation
- Insert the Trainer Materials compact disc in the CD-ROM drive.
- Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- In Control Panel, double-click the Fonts icon.
- In the Fonts window, on the File menu, click Install New Font.
- In the Drives box, click your CD-ROM drive.
- In the Folders box, double-click the Fonts folder.
The fonts appear in the List of fonts box.
- Click the Select All button, and then click OK.
- Follow the prompts to install the fonts.
- Click OK when all of the fonts are installed.
Student Computer Setup
Use the following instructions to set up each students computer:
- Set up the hardware according to the manufacturers instructions. (Refer to the
hardware requirements.)

- Start the computer with the Windows NT Server Setup boot disk.

- Insert the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 compact disc into the CD-ROM
drive.
- When the NTSP3.htm Web page appears, scroll down, and then click Install Service Pack.

- Click Open.

- To copy the Trainer Materials compact disc contents to each student computer
- Copy the Trainer Materials compact disc contents to each student computer. The following
directory contents need to be copied to each student computer.
- Copy the \MOC directory and all contents under it to each student computers. This
directory contains the northwind database script files.
- Copy the \Sphinx_442.03 directory and all contents under it to the student computers.
This directory contains all the program files for installing SQL Server 7.0 and
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0.
- By copying the files to the student computers, students will be able to install
SQL Server from their own computer in the first lab.

- To install and configure Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0
- Run the ie4setup.exe Setup application located in \Sphinx_442.03\Ie4 on the
compact disc. Use the information in the following table to complete the installation.

Trainer Materials Compact Disc Contents
The Trainer Materials compact disc contains the following files and folders:
- Readme.txt
. This file contains a description of the compact disc contents and setup
instructions, saved in ASCII format (non-Word document).
- Setupgd.doc
. This file contains a description of classroom requirements, classroom
configuration, and classroom setup instructions.
- Appendix
. This folder contains appendix files for this course.
- Fonts
. This folder contains fonts required to view the PowerPoint presentation and
Web-based materials.
- Ie40
. This folder contains files required to install Microsoft Internet Explorer
4.0. Located on \Sphinx_442.03\i386\Ie4.
- MOC
. This folder contains files used in the hands-on labs. Files may be used to
prepare the student computers for the hands-on labs.
- PowerPnt
. This folder contains the PowerPoint slides used for this course.
- PptView.
This folder contains the PowerPoint Viewer, which is used to display the
PowerPoint slides.
- WordView
. This folder contains the Word Viewer that is used to view any Microsoft® Word document (.doc) files included on the compact disc.
PowerPoint Viewer
PowerPoint Viewer is a special application that is shipped with Microsoft PowerPoint
and is designed to give electronic slide shows. You can use the Viewer yourself or give it
to others who are going to be running your slide shows but do not have PowerPoint. You can
freely copy the PowerPoint Viewer program onto any compatible system to allow you to run
PowerPoint slide shows.
- To use the PowerPoint Viewer
- Insert the Trainer Materials compact disc into the CD-ROM drive.
- Start Windows NT Explorer, and expand the drive:\PptView folder (where drive
is the letter assigned to your CD-ROM drive).
- Double-click the PptView.exe file.
- After PowerPoint Viewer starts, in the Drives box, click the drive assigned to
your CD-ROM drive.
- In the Directories box, click PowerPnt.
In the Filename box, click the appropriate PowerPoint file, and then
click Show. |
