Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.01 or later, a modem, and an account with an
Internet service provider or online service.
Software
You will need the following software to setup the course:
- Microsoft Windows NT Workstation or Server 4.0 with Service Pack 3, or later
- Visual InterDev 6.0 (Professional Edition) client and server, which includes Internet
Explorer 4.01 or later, FrontPage Server Extensions, Windows NT Option Pack, with Internet
Information Server, 4.0, Microsoft Transaction Server, Index Server, and SMTP Mail Server
- Microsoft SQL Server 6.5, or later
- Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 (Professional Edition.)
Setup Instructions
These instructions assume you are installing software from the disk
sets listed in the Software section. If you install the software from a network share, or
Internet location, some of the instructions may differ, particularly the setup locations.
Use the following steps to install and configure each computer.
Student Computer Setup
- Set up the hardware according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Install Microsoft Windows NT4 Server.
- Format the hard drive to a single partition that uses the file allocation table (FAT)
file system.
Important Before formatting the hard drive, ensure that you have the necessary
boot diskette(s) for your computer to load the drivers for the CD-ROM drive you are going
to use to install Windows NT4.
- Insert the Windows NT4 Server CD-ROM into the drive.
- Open a command prompt window for the CD-ROM drive.
- Change to the \i386 folder on the CD-ROM, type winnt /b, and then press Enter. Windows
NT files will be copied to the hard disk.
- Follow the prompts to install Windows NT Server.
The first part of the installation program is where you determine which disk partition
you want to install on the computer.
Note You will be asked to specify whether you want to convert to an NTFS
partition, or leave the current file system intact. If you need to convert to an NTFS
partition, highlight Convert the Partition to NTFS and press the Enter key. You
will then be asked to confirm the selection.
Create an NTFS Partition
- Highlight To convert the drive to NTFS, press C.

the computer's audio card. The multi-media elements will display without an audio card,
however, students will need to use the closed caption feature to read along.
Install Windows NT Service Pack 3 or higher
To install the Service Pack:
- Insert the Windows NT Service Pack 3 CD-ROM into the drive.
- In the root folder of the CD-ROM, run spsetup.bat to begin installing the service pack.
- Follow the prompts to install the service pack without creating an uninstall folder.
When setup asks you to restart the computer, click OK. Setup is complete.
Installing Visual InterDev
The Visual InterDev setup program contains separate client and server installations. For
this course, you will need to install both the client and server portions on the same
computer. First install the client portion followed by the server.
- Insert installation CD1 into your computer.
- Setup.exe automatically runs the Installation Wizard. The wizard steps you through the
installation process.
Note Depending on your selections and your current configuration, the wizard
will prompt you to install different required components, including Internet Explorer 4.01
or later, and to reboot Windows one or more times during the installation process. After
each reboot, the wizard automatically returns to the proper step.
- Follow the steps of the Installation Wizard until you are prompted to select either Install
Visual InterDev 6.0 or Server Applications.
- To install the client portion of Visual InterDev, select Install Visual InterDev
6.0 and click Next. Then see Client Installation below for
instructions about completing the client portion of setup.
Client Installation
The following steps will direct you on how to complete the client portion of the Visual
InterDev installation.
- Follow the steps of the Visual InterDev 6.0 Wizard. When prompted, select either a
Typical or Custom installation.
- After the Visual InterDev client has been installed on your computer, you are prompted
to install MSDN, the Microsoft Developer Network. Note that you need to install MSDN
in order for F1 Help to work and to have access to the Visual InterDev documentation.
Note You may want to copy the contents of the MSDN Visual Studio Help CD-ROM
onto a server in your classroom. You can then install MSDN from this server onto each
student's computer rather than using an MSDN Visual Studio Help CD-ROM. This eliminates
the need for students to frequently switch between the MSDN Visual Studio Help CD-ROM and
the Mastering Application Development Using Visual InterDev 6 CD-ROM during
class.
- After MSDN is installed, you arrive at the Server Setups screen. Because you will need
to install the Visual InterDev server on the same computer, go to Server Installation
below for instructions.
Server Installation
The following steps will direct you on how to complete the server portion of the Visual
InterDev installation.
- When prompted by the wizard, select Launch BackOffice Installation Wizard and
click Install. The BackOffice Installation Wizard will prompt you to
select the Custom or Visual InterDev Developer option.
- Select the Custom option and click Next.
- Select the following options:
- Windows NT Option Pack 4.0
- MS® Data Access Components
- Remote Machine Debugging
- FrontPage Server Extensions
- Visual InterDev Server Components
- Before you click Next, expand the Windows NT Option
Pack 4.0 node. In addition to the options selected by default, select the Visual
InterDev RAD Remote Deployment Support node. Then expand the Visual
InterDev RAD Remote Deployment Support node and select the second instance of Visual
InterDev RAD Remote Deployment Support. Make sure that Visual
InterDev RAD Remote Deployment Support is selected at both levels.
- Click Next and continue with the remaining steps of the
BackOffice Installation Wizard.
The following patch corrects problems related to debugging Active Server Pages and for
updating the Global.asa file. After the Installation Wizard has finished, apply this
patch.
- Run \IIS\WinNT\ASP2FIX1.EXE from the installation disc. For Visual InterDev Professional
version, it's located on CD1.
- Reboot when prompted.
Install Microsoft SQL Server 6.5
To install Microsoft SQL Server 6.5:
- Insert the Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 CD-ROM into the drive.
- Change to the \i386 folder on the CD-ROM, and double-click setup.exe.
- Follow the prompts to install SQL Server until the Microsoft SQL Server 6.5-Options
dialog box appears.
- Select Install SQL Server and Utilities, and then click Continue.
At this point, you will configure SQL Server using the information in the following
tables (each table corresponds to a dialog box in the setup program):
| Licensing Information |

| Enable Multi-protocol Encryption |
No. Leave this option unchecked |
Install Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 Service Pack 4
Note If you already have Microsoft SQL Server Service Pack 4 installed, the
version number will be listed as 6.50.281 in the SQL Server Enterprise Manager Help
About dialog box.
- Insert the Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 Service Pack 4 CD-ROM into the drive.
- Change to the \i386 folder on the CD-ROM, and double-click setup.exe.
- Follow the prompts to install the service pack.
Note During the installation of the service pack, you will be prompted for a
System Administrator (SA) password. In the SA Password dialog box, leave the SA
Password and the Confirm Password fields blank, before clicking Continue.
Install Microsoft Visual Basic 6, Professional Edition
To install Microsoft Visual Basic 6:
- Insert the Microsoft Visual Basic 6 Professional CD-ROM into the drive.
- Double-click setup.exe.
If you already installed Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1 when you installed Visual
InterDev 6, you will not be prompted to do so again. However, if you did not do this, as
part of the Visual Basic setup, you will be required to install Internet Explorer 4.01
SP1.
Note If you already have Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1 installed, the
version number will be listed as 4.72.3110.8 in the Internet Explorer Help About dialog
box.
- If you are prompted to install Internet Explorer, select a Standard Installation, and
choose the default installation options. After installing Internet Explorer you must
restart the computer. The Visual Basic setup program will continue after the computer
restarts.
- Select Install Visual Basic 6.0 Professional Edition after the computer
has restarted, and click Next.
- When prompted for the type of installation, click Typical. Visual Basic
files will be copied to your computer.
- Reboot when prompted.
- After rebooting, your will be prompted to install MSDN Help. As you have already
installed this through the Visual InterDev setup program, uncheck the Install MSDN
option in the wizard screen, and click Next.
A message box appears, warning you that the online documentation and help will be
unavailable if you exit the Visual Basic 6.0 Professional Edition Installation Wizard
before installing MSDN, and asking you to confirm your selection. This does not apply as
you have already installed the entire MSDN Help. Click Yes to dismiss
this warning.
- Click through the remaining screens of the wizard to complete the setup.
Install Mastering Application Development Using Visual InterDev 6
Use the Complete installation option so the lab files will be copied to the \Labs
folder on the student computer.
