Visual Basic 6
Development (1013) Set-up Guide Setting Up the Course
Classroom Requirements
This course requires a classroom with a minimum of one computer for the instructor and one
computer for each student. Before class begins, install and configure all computers using
the following instructions.
Student and Instructor Computers
Hardware Level 2
- A Pentium 90 computer
- 48 MB RAM
- A 1 GB hard disk
- A MPC2-compatible CD-ROM drive
- A network adapter
- A superVGA, 256-color monitor
- A Microsoft mouse or compatible pointing device
- For student computers: An MPC2-compatible sound card with headphones is recommended.
- A 3 1/2-inch floppy disk drive (Optional, but useful to allow students to take copies of
their work or notebook files home.)
- For the instructor computer: An MPC2-compatible sound card with amplified speakers is
required to present multimedia elements.
- For the instructor computer: A video projection device that displays 800x600x256c
Software
- Microsoft Windows NT 4 Server SP3 or higher
- Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 SP4 or higher
- Microsoft Visual Basic 6, Professional Edition
Reference Materials
All necessary reference materials are included in the Library section of the Mastering
Visual Basic 6 Development CD-ROM.
Setup Instructions
Use the following steps to install and configure each computer.
Student Computer Setup
- Set up the hardware according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Install Microsoft Windows NT4 Server.
- Format the hard drive to a single partition that uses the file allocation table (FAT)
file system.
Important Before formatting the hard drive, ensure that you have the necessary
boot diskette(s) for your computer to load the drivers for the CD-ROM drive you are going
to use to install Windows NT4.
- Insert the Windows NT4 Server CD-ROM into the drive.
- Open a command prompt window for the CD-ROM drive.
- Change to the \i386 folder on the CD-ROM, type winnt /b and then press Enter.
Windows NT files will be copied to the hard disk.
- Follow the prompts to install Windows NT Server using the parameters provided in the
following table. Respond to all other installation prompts with information appropriate
for the computer or location.

Note If your students need to listen to the multi-media components in Mastering
Microsoft Visual Basic 6 Development, you will need to configure the computer's audio
card. The multi-media elements will display without an audio card, however, students will
need to use the closed caption feature to read along.
Install Windows NT Service Pack 3 or higher.
- Insert the Windows NT Service Pack 3 CD-ROM into the drive.
- In the root folder of the CD-ROM, run spsetup.bat to begin installing the service pack.
- Follow the prompts to install the service pack without creating an uninstall folder.
Install Microsoft SQL Server 6.5.
- Insert the Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 CD-ROM into the drive.
- Change to the \i386 folder on the CD-ROM, and double-click setup.exe.
- Follow the prompts to install SQL Server until the Microsoft SQL Server 6.5-Options
dialog box appears.
- Select Install SQL Server and Utilities, and then click Continue.
- Configure SQL Server using the following information.

Install Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 Service Pack 4.
Note If you already have Microsoft SQL Server Service Pack 4 installed, the
version number will be listed as 6.50.281 in the SQL Server Enterprise Manager Help
About dialog box.
- Insert the Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 Service Pack 4 CD-ROM into the drive.
- Change to the \i386 folder on the CD-ROM, and double-click setup.exe.
- Follow the prompts to install the service pack.
Install Microsoft Visual Basic 6, Professional Edition.
- Insert the Microsoft Visual Basic 6 Professional CD-ROM into the drive.
- Double-click setup.exe.
As part of the Visual Basic setup, you will be required to install Internet Explorer
4.01 SP1.
Note If you already have Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1 installed, the version
number will be listed as 4.72.3110.8 in the Internet Explorer Help About dialog
box.
- Select a Standard Installation for Internet Explorer, and choose the default
installation options.
After installing Internet Explorer you must restart the computer. The Visual Basic
setup program will continue after the computer restarts.
- Select Install Visual Basic 6.0 Professional Edition after the computer has
restarted, and click Next.
- When prompted for the type of installation, click Typical.
Visual Basic files will be copied to your computer.
- Install MSDN Visual Studio Help when prompted by the Visual Basic setup program. This is
the online help for Visual Basic.
Note You may want to copy the contents of the MSDN Visual Studio Help CD onto a
server in your classroom. You can then install MSDN from this server onto each student's
computer rather than using an MSDN Visual Studio Help CD. This eliminates the need for
students to frequently switch between the MSDN Visual Studio Help CD and the Mastering
Visual Basic 6 Development CD during class.
- Select the Launch BackOffice® Installation Wizard and click Install.
You will use this wizard to install Microsoft Internet Information Server 4.0.
- Select a Custom installation of BackOffice, and then click Next.
- Review the disk space requirements, and then click Next.
- Expand the list of Windows NT Option Pack components and clear the check boxes for the
following components:
- FrontPage® 98 Server Extensions
- Data Access Components 1.5
- Index Server
- Script Debugger
- Transaction Server
- Windows Scripting Host
- Front Page Server Extensions
The remaining components selected in the list will install Internet Information Server
4.0 (IIS) and other components that it uses.
- Click Next to install IIS.
- Click Next to select the default folder locations for IIS.
- Click Next to confirm your installation choices.
- Install Mastering Microsoft Visual Basic 6 Development; use the Complete
installation option.
The lab files will be copied to <install folder> \Labs.
